Azerbaijan is a Turkic territory in the Caucasus of Southeastern Europe and Asia. Most residents are Shia Muslim, a belief it shares with neighboring Iran. It attained independence after the crumple of the Soviet Union in 1991. It has borders with Armenia, Georgia, Iran, Russia and Turkey as well as a Caspian Sea coastline. The country's territory also encompasses several islands in the Caspian Sea. Weather: Nine out of eleven existing climate zones are present in Azerbaijan, although a great deal of it is dry and semiarid steppe. The formation of climate in Azerbaijan is influenced particularly by cold arctic air masses of Scandinavian anticyclone, temperate of Siberian anticyclone, and Central Asian anticyclone. Regarding landscape diversity, air masses have different ways to enter the country. Meanwhile plains and foothills are characterized by high solar radiation rates. Culture & Religion: According to certified figures, between 93.4% and 96% of the population is Muslim, of which 85% are Shia and 15% Sunni. Christians compose of 3 to 4% of the population, of which most are Russian and Armenian Orthodox. Azerbaijan folk consist of Azerbaijanis, the delegate part of society, as well as of nations and ethnic groups, compactly living in various areas of the country. Among national musical instruments there are fourteen string instruments, eight percussion instruments and six wind instruments. Azerbaijan national and traditional dress, are the Chokha and Papakhi. Eat & Drink: Cabbage, grape leaves, and eggplant wrapped meat, kabab, rice with chicken and other stuff, gutabs and meatballs (kufta) are some of the specialties of Azerbaijan. Some local drinks include ayran (a yogurt drink based on sour milk), sherbet (made from rose petals or saffron). There are also diverse sorts of quite decent wines produced from local grapes, and a wide array of mineral waters from natural springs. Talk: Azeri is the certified language. It is a Turkic language which belongs to the Altaic group, and is understandable, to varying degrees, with Turkish. The language is written with the Latin alphabet today, but was earlier written in the Arabic and Cyrillic alphabets. The changes in alphabet have been largely molded by religious and political forces. However, English is spoken in some places frequented by Westerners. Many people also speak Russian (which is now declining and slowly being replaced by English), especially in the capital city, Baku. Learn: There is a great deal of work to be done in Azerbaijan from teaching and NGO work to work in the oil and tourism sectors. Rental guest houses might be a good alternate as they are cheaper than hotels and sometimes are even more relaxed. |
